Do midwives carry medications?

Yes, midwives carry both routine and emergency medications, including:

  • routine preventative newborn medications (vitamin K and erythromycin eye ointment)
  • three different medications to stop bleeding with the delivery of the placenta
  • IV fluids
  • antibiotics to prevent GBS infection of the newborn
  • medical oxygen
  • Rhogam, when needed
  • emergency medications to prevent seizure, treat anaphylactic shock, and stop contractions, when needed

Midwives also carry:

  • newborn resuscitation equipment, and other emergency supplies
  • suturing equipment (including local numbing medication) for normal perineal repairs
