Prenatal Care

Individualized prenatal visits allow ample time to discuss in depth your wellbeing, any questions and concerns you may have, and relevant testing and treatment options. Equally important, these appointments allow for continuity and a relaxed setting in which we can get to know one another and build a foundation of trust and understanding by the time of your birth.

At each visit I check up on the wellbeing of both you and your baby, allowing as much time as necessary to address your questions. By providing you with information and attentive care every step of the way, my goal is to support you in preparing physically and emotionally for labor and birth, and for the transition to motherhood.

Visits typically last from 45 minutes to an hour. Prenatal visits are scheduled monthly until 28 weeks, every two weeks until 36 weeks, and then weekly until labor begins. Additional appointments are scheduled as needed.

As part of routine prenatal care, I offer:

  • Physical exams
  • Prenatal testing
  • Lab work
  • Ultrasound referrals

Time is allowed to discuss all testing, and my expectation is that this will be a two-way conversation, at the end of which you are able to make an informed decision about your health and the health of your baby.

A midwife is also available 24/7 should you have urgent pregnancy-related concerns, and for when labor begins.

Should you develop a condition during pregnancy that is outside of our scope and expertise, Tidelands Midwifery has an extensive network of physicians and other healthcare providers with whom we consult. When complications develop which warrant different tools and expertise than we possess, we facilitate a smooth transfer of care to an appropriate provider.

Home Birth & Birth Center Birth

Choose between giving birth in the comfort of your own home, or in the home-like setting of a freestanding birth center.

I believe in the right to give birth in an environment that feels comfortable and safe. I feel fortunate to offer our clients the option of birthing at home or in a freestanding birth center.

Postpartum Care

Regular postpartum visits in your home and in our office until 6-8 weeks after birth support a normal and complete recovery, and a healthy transition to parenthood. As part of routine postpartum care, I offer:

  • Physical exam to assess healing and recovery from birth, including breast exam and pap smear if indicated
  • Referrals for birth control, as desired
  • Referrals for physical therapy, as desired

Newborn Care

Routine home and office visits in your baby’s first two weeks of life help to ensure a healthy transition to life outside the womb, and normal feeding and weight gain.

As part of routine newborn care, Tidelands offers:

  • Newborn physical exam in the hours after birth, including newborn medications as desired (vitamin K and erythromycin eye ointment)
  • Education about healthy newborn care and behavior
  • Weight checks at each visit
  • Pulse oximetry screening at the day-1 home visit (to detect rare but critical congenital heart defects)
  • Newborn metabolic screening (state-wide metabolic screen for dozens of life-threatening but treatable disorders)

Lactation Support

Since midwives care for both moms and babies, we are particularly well suited to provide breastfeeding support to new families. I include ample attention to lactation as part of routine birth and postpartum care, and refer to skilled lactation consultants should you and your baby desire or require more expertise to support successful breastfeeding.
